The Details: The Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute is an intensive academy for serious, disciplined, and motivated students in the artistic fields of acting, creative writing, ballet, modern dance, orchestra, chorus, drawing and painting, photography, and film and video. In addition to studying a chosen field, students are exposed to a rich variety of art forms and learning experiences. Students and faculty attend or participate in performances, gallery openings, poetry readings, and ballroom dance classes. Faculty groups perform in the OSAI's chamber music series Eine Kleine Quartzmusik. The talent and creativity of students and faculty combine with the mystique of Quartz Mountain to create a powerful synergy that every artist should experience!

The Environment: Quartz Mountain State Park in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma, overlooks the peaceful waters of Lake Altus-Lugert. An ancient, sacred, and inspiring site, Quartz Mountain was ceremonial grounds for Kiowa, Comanche, Wichita, Apache, and Caddo tribes. Today, Quartz Mountain is now home to an Arts and Conference Center. The Center is an ideal retreat for arts immersion. With the 700-seat Twin Peaks Performance Hall, a state-of-the-art darkroom, five studio pavilions, an outdoor amphitheater, the Beverly Badger Memorial Library, and the Quartz Mountain Art Collection, the Arts and Conference center is the region's artistic epicenter. Nature lovers enjoy hiking and biking trails, bird watching, and a unique Oklahoma ecosystem. The Arts and Conference Center at Quartz Mountain is truly an Oklahoma treasure.

Who can apply?

  • All Oklahoma high school and junior high students who will be between the ages of 14 and 18 by June 14, 2008. Graduating seniors who are 19 are also eligible.
  • All applicants must be enrolled in an Oklahoma public school, private school, or homeschool program.
  • OSAI is intense and the workload is heavy. Applicants should be disciplined, motivated, and serious about their art form.

    Can I apply for more than one discipline?

  • Yes. You can apply for up to three disciplines.
  • Keep in mind that you must pay a $15 non-refundable application fee for each discipline, and you must submit a separate application, including supplemental information, for each discipline.
  • If the disciplines are related (i.e. Ballet and Modern Dance, Viola and Cello) you may submit only one set of Recommendation Forms. If the disciplines are unrelated (i.e. Acting and Photography) you must submit a set of Recommendation Forms for each discipline.
  • The applications may be mailed in the same envelope.

    How much does it cost to attend the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute?

  • All selected students attend the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute on full scholarships worth over $2,400 each.
  • Your scholarship includes tuition, room and board, equipment, facilities, operating costs, and full-time security, nursing, counseling, and administrative staffs.
  • In addition to the $15 application fee, attending students must pay a $200 non-refundable processing fee. Some disciplines, such as photography, require students to provide supplies.
  • Students demonstrating financial need may be eligible for assistance through the OAI Angel Fund.
  • Scholarships are provided by the Oklahoma State Department of Education and matched by private donations secured by the Oklahoma Arts Institute.
  • Additional program funding is provided by the Oklahoma Arts Council.

    When will I find out if I'm accepted?

  • All applicants, whether accepted, not accepted, or accepted as an alternate, will be notified by mail in early April, 2008.

    Can I arrive at the Summer Arts Institute late or leave early?

  • No. Students must check in at the Quartz Mountain Arts and Conference Center in Lone Wolf, OK, on June 14, 2008 and remain until the end of the Closing Ceremonies on June 29, 2008. Students are NOT allowed to leave the camp during the program.

    Can I earn college credit for attending OSAI?

  • No. College credit is no longer available.

    What kind of housing and accommodations can OSAI students expect?

  • 24-hour on-site security and medical staffs ensure the safety of every OSAI student.
  • All students are housed within the Quartz Mountain State Park. Female students reside in the Quartz Mountain Lodge, and male students stay in dormitories and cabins on the park grounds. The entire state park is monitored by park rangers and 24-hour OAI staff.
  • Meals are served in the Sundance Cafe at the Quartz Mountain Lodge. Vegetarian options are available at each meal, and other dietary restrictions can be accommodated.
